Kenya’s political landscape has shifted significantly in recent months, especially after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Raila, who for decades influenced national politics, had hinted at supporting President William Ruto after the formation of the broad-based government. His endorsement would have strengthened Ruto’s chances ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
However, with Raila gone, the political equation has changed. President Ruto is now facing increasing pressure from different regions over the high cost of living, delayed government projects, and unfulfilled economic promises. This dissatisfaction is slowly weakening his support base as the country heads toward another election cycle.
One of the biggest challenges for Ruto is the Mount Kenya region, which overwhelmingly voted for him in 2022.Over the past year, local leaders, traders, and youth groups have openly expressed frustration with the economic situation.
Many feel the region has not received the level of attention it expected when it supported the Kenya Kwanza administration. If this dissatisfaction continues, Ruto may struggle to maintain the huge numbers he enjoyed there.
As revealed by the Daily Nation newspaper and the star Kenya, the president’s relationship with opposition-leaning regions remains delicate.Areas that traditionally supported Raila Odinga, especially Nyanza, the Coast, and Western Kenya, are yet to fully warm up to Ruto’s administration.
Leaders from these regions have repeatedly asked for more development and inclusion, arguing that they have been sidelined for years. With Raila no longer alive to guide his supporters politically, the 2027 voting patterns remain unpredictable.
In my opinion, three regions will ultimately determine President Ruto’s fate in the upcoming election: Nyanza, the Coast, and Western Kenya.
These regions collectively hold millions of votes and have historically played a major role in deciding national outcomes. If President Ruto fails to win even a reasonable share of support from these areas, his path to re-election becomes extremely narrow.
