RIP: Last Painful Words Nairobi Businessman Told His Wife Before He Was Killed at Raila’s Ceremony

A wave of deep sorrow has swept across Nairobi following the tragic death of Evans Onyango Kiche, a well-known city businessman who was among the three people fatally shot during the chaos that erupted at Raila Odinga’s body-viewing ceremony held at Kasarani Stadium.

His devastated wife, Brenda Akoth, could hardly hold back her tears as she painfully recounted her last moments with her husband before he left their home on that fateful morning.

According to Brenda, Onyango—who operated a small but thriving hotel business in Nairobi—had sensed possible tension surrounding the day’s events and was initially reluctant to step out.

She revealed that her husband had expressed concern over the expected large crowds and potential disorder at the venue.

Despite her emotional pleas urging him to stay home, Onyango reassured her that he would only be away for a short while and promised to return soon.

“Before he left, he told me he would be back in a few minutes,” Brenda said, her voice breaking as she recalled his final words.

Moments later, she received the devastating news that her husband had been shot dead during the commotion at the stadium.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that chaos broke out hours before the official public viewing began.

Police officers allegedly resorted to using teargas and live ammunition in an attempt to control the massive crowd surging toward the gates of Kasarani Stadium.

In the ensuing confusion, Onyango—aged 40 and a father of three—was tragically caught in the crossfire as he tried to pay his last respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

Speaking to the press outside City Mortuary, Brenda, accompanied by Hussein Khalid, a prominent human rights defender from VOCAL Africa, described her husband as a kind-hearted, loving, and industrious man who was deeply devoted to his family.

She emphasized that Onyango was the pillar of their household and always worked hard to provide for his wife and children.

The shocking incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from Kenyans across the nation.

Many citizens have taken to social media demanding justice and accountability from security agencies for the unnecessary loss of innocent lives during what was meant to be a solemn national mourning event.
