Kenyans have expressed deep anger after Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga was captured on video making reckless remarks about the late Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a funeral in Nyeri County, Kahiga appeared to suggest that Raila’s death was a blessing to the Mt. Kenya region — a statement that has caused outrage across the country.
In the clip that spread quickly on social media, the governor spoke in Kikuyu language, claiming that since Raila had joined President William Ruto’s government, development meant for Mt. Kenya had been diverted to other regions. His audience clapped and cheered, but the rest of the country did not take it lightly.
Many Kenyans, including politicians from different communities, condemned Kahiga for being insensitive and promoting tribal divisions at a time when the nation is still mourning Raila’s passing.
South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro said it was shameful for any leader to celebrate death, especially of a national figure.
