Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dropped his clearest hint yet that Kalonzo Musyoka could emerge as the United Opposition’s presidential flagbearer in the 2027 General Election, signaling growing momentum behind the Wiper leader within the coalition.
Speaking during recent political engagements In MakueniCounty, Gachagua suggested that the opposition was increasingly rallying behind Kalonzo as a possible single candidate to face President William Ruto in the next presidential contest.
His remarks have fueled speculation that the United Opposition is quietly settling on a consensus candidate ahead of the high-stakes election.
The DCP leader’s statements are being interpreted as part of a broader strategy to consolidate opposition unity.
Leaders allied to the coalition have repeatedly emphasized the importance of presenting one strong candidate to avoid splitting votes, a mistake analysts say has previously weakened opposition chances in past elections.
Reports indicate that opposition figures including Gachagua and Kalonzo have been coordinating closely as they prepare a joint approach toward 2027.
Gachagua has also previously hinted at working alongside Kalonzo to form a future government, reinforcing perceptions that the Wiper Patriotic Front leader could take the top seat while other coalition partners assume supporting roles.
However, despite the growing signals, the United Opposition has not formally unveiled its presidential candidate.
Coalition leaders earlier indicated that the decision would be made after internal consultations among partner parties to ensure unity and strengthen their chances against the incumbent administration.
If confirmed, Kalonzo’s candidacy would mark another major attempt by the veteran politician to capture the presidency after years of playing key roles in coalition politics, including serving as Kenya’s Vice President between 2008 and 2013.
