Mathira MP Erick Wamumbi has taken a playful swipe at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Facebook following the viral moment in which Gachagua accidentally endorsed the UDA candidate during a church service in Ruai Nairobi County on Saturday.
Wamumbi who is a staunch UDA supporter wasted no time in poking fun at his neighbour from Mathira after the clip of Gachagua's slip spread widely across social media platforms and sparked intense online debate.
Taking to Facebook the MP wrote: "Nikiwaambia mimi na RiggyG tumetoka kijii moja hamskii tutawaacha kwa mataa."
Loosely translated the post implied that he and Gachagua hail from the same village and that despite the opposition posturing Gachagua would eventually abandon his current allies and leave them stranded.
The post drew a wave of laughter and comments from Kenyans who found the timing perfectly crafted to maximise the embarrassment of the gaffe.
Many online users tagged friends and flooded the comments section with jokes and memes referencing the moment.
Wamumbi's dig was pointed because Gachagua has been one of the loudest critics of UDA and President William Ruto since his impeachment in October 2024.
He has been building the Democracy for the Citizens Party as a direct challenger to UDA's dominance in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general election.
The slip occurred as Gachagua was addressing congregants at Born Again Evangelism Church in Ruai where he was praising DCP's Ol Kalou nominations.
He said the winner of the UDA nominations would become the next MP before catching himself and quickly correcting the statement to refer to the DCP candidate.
Despite the correction the damage was done with critics and political rivals moving swiftly to amplify the clip.
Wamumbi's Facebook post became one of the most shared reactions of the day turning the incident into a full social media moment.
The exchange highlights the deeply personal nature of Central Kenya politics where rivals from the same community often trade barbs with a mixture of humour and hard-edged political calculation.
As the Ol Kalou by-election approaches the banter between UDA and DCP camps is only expected to intensify.
