"Tumemwachia Gachagua Na Kalonzo" Junet Mohamed Declares ODM Out Of Opposition

Kenya’s political scene has taken a dramatic turn following a declaration by ODM Senator Junet Mohamed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will no longer actively engage in opposition politics.

Speaking during a recent interview, Junet stated that ODM would now leave the task of challenging the government to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. His remarks have ignited intense debate across the political spectrum, signaling what could be a major realignment ahead of the 2027 general election.

Junet clarified that ODM is not abandoning its principles but rather recalibrating its approach. He explained that the party intends to focus on consolidating its political base, strengthening its internal structures, and refining its long-term strategy instead of being consumed by daily opposition confrontations.

This marks a departure from ODM’s traditional combative stance, which for over a decade has positioned it as a leading voice against government excesses and unpopular policies.

The announcement has triggered mixed reactions among Kenyans. Some have praised the move as a sign of political maturity and strategic foresight, arguing that constant opposition can lead to fatigue and diminish impact.

Others, however, express concern that ODM’s reduced presence in the opposition space could give President William Ruto’s UDA party an even firmer grip on the political narrative.

Analysts suggest that this vacuum may compel Gachagua and Kalonzo to strengthen their coordination to keep the opposition relevant and cohesive.

As political dynamics continue to evolve, ODM’s shift is seen as a calculated move to rebuild its grassroots networks while observing how the current administration’s performance shapes public opinion. The next few months will be critical in determining whether this new strategy revitalizes ODM’s influence or sidelines it from the country’s fast-shifting political landscape.
