Oburu Oginga, the acting leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has declared that his party is ready to challenge William Ruto and his government at the next election.
He said ODM is working hard to rebuild and strengthen itself so that it will not be forced into an alliance, but will stand on its own with a candidate.
Oginga explained that if Ruto returned to ODM, it would not guarantee him the party’s nomination as presidential candidate, because ODM will make everybody compete fairly.
He pointed out that the party’s plan is to field a strong candidate in the 2027 general election and aim to form the next government.
ODM’s secretary-general Edwin Sifuna reinforced the message by saying ODM will not merge or form a broad-based alliance that dilutes its identity, and that the party has capable leaders ready to step up.
Sifuna even named Oburu Oginga himself, among others, as potential flag-bearers for ODM in 2027 and argued that the party remains unbeatable if it maintains unity and discipline.
In his remarks, Oginga urged young leaders inside ODM and the wider community of supporters to rise up, get involved, and help strengthen the party’s grassroots network so that it can compete effectively.
He also said that the party is working to heal internal cracks in various regions and to build a detailed strategy, which they will release once certain internal processes are completed.

Oginga’s statements signal that ODM sees the next election as a major opportunity, and that it hopes to move from being a challenger party to becoming the governing party.
His remarks further suggest that ODM is shifting from being focused on a single charismatic leader to building a broader bench of leaders and preparing for generational change within the party.
How this will play out, and whether ODM can truly turn its ambitions into victory will depend on how well it addresses its internal unity, candidate selection process, and ability to connect with voters across Kenya ahead of 2027.
