Revealed: Why Robert Alai Allegedly Pulled Out Gun on Babu Owino in Restaurant But Failed To Shoot Him

Kenyan newspapers on Sunday, January 4, highlighted two major stories: the united opposition’s new political direction and a tense confrontation between Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Both events show how active and unpredictable Kenya’s political scene has become as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.

According to the reports, the United Opposition has started to reorganise early so it can face President William Ruto’s administration with a stronger and more coordinated plan.

Opposition leaders believe that 2026 will be an important year and that waiting too long could weaken their influence.

The leaders want to build a united team, choose their presidential flag bearer early and avoid the last-minute divisions that affected past elections.

Insiders say the coalition wants to move away from protests and instead focus on policy, grassroots organisation and legal challenges to actions they describe as government overreach.

They also want to use reports from the Auditor-General and Controller of Budget to show Kenyans where they believe public money is being misused.

According to the leaders, many Kenyans are struggling with high taxes, rising prices and unemployment, so the opposition must show a practical plan that speaks to those problems.

Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and others say they will not allow President Ruto to dictate their political direction.

They argue that unity and a clear message will be the key to winning support across the country.

Another major story covered by newspapers was the dramatic encounter involving Robert Alai and Babu Owino at a Lebanese restaurant in Kilimani.

Witnesses said Babu was having lunch with another man when Alai entered the restaurant and approached his table.

The disagreement started when Alai accused Babu of being behind online attacks against his wife.

The politician claimed that activist Maverick Aoko had targeted his spouse with harsh posts and believed Babu had encouraged the behaviour. Babu denied knowing Alai’s wife or having anything to do with the posts.

The argument became heated and, according to witnesses, Alai allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at Babu.

Reports say the gun jammed, giving a senior DCI officer who was eating nearby enough time to step in. The officer quickly disarmed Alai and stopped the situation from getting worse.
