Concern As Mathira Girl Disappears After being Spotted with Mysterious Man, Clothes Recovered

Protests erupted in Mathira following the disappearance of a girl identified as Shantel Waruguru.

According to reports, the 9-year-old from Kianjogu village in Mathira went missing on February 7, 2026, and the family immediately began the search.

On February 8, 2026, during the search, clothes, including a panty that the mother has confirmed Shantel was wearing on Saturday and a boxer (suspected to belong to one Njuguna, who is the main suspect), were found a few metres from a house belonging to the suspect.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations attached to Kiamachimbi police station went to the site and collected all evidence, including the mattress and anything else that could aid in the investigations.

The officers also arrested a man believed to be the main suspect.

According to reports, 4 girls who were last seen with Shantel confirmed that the suspect gave Shantel 10ksh to go get herself some sweets, and that is the last time they saw her.

On February 9, 2026, residents who took to the streets called on the police to hasten investigations, fearing for the safety of the child who is still missing.

Police called on residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
