Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has for the first time addressed speculation that he could be replaced as President William Ruto’s running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a development rally in Tharaka Nithi on Wednesday, Kindiki appeared to concede that his position is not guaranteed, signaling a shift from his earlier firm stance on retaining the deputy presidency.
The DP noted that leadership positions are temporary and subject to change, hinting that he is prepared for any political decision that may be made regarding his role.
Kindiki emphasized the need for unity, urging leaders and supporters to continue backing President Ruto’s administration regardless of any potential changes in the coming days.
His remarks come amid growing political interest in the deputy president position, with several key leaders reportedly positioning themselves for the slot.
Among those mentioned are Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had earlier weighed in on the debate, dismissing it as a distraction.
He maintained that regardless of who is chosen as running mate, President Ruto would still face a tough political contest in the upcoming election.
