Oburu Is the Reason Luos Are Still United Despite Sifuna's Attempt to Split the Community – Odoyo Owidi

Oburu Oginga has emerged as a stabilizing figure within ODM following the death of Raila Odinga, with party veteran Odoyo Owidi crediting him for keeping the Luo community united despite internal disagreements.

Speaking on April 2, Owidi praised Oburu’s leadership, describing him as the “unifying force” who has prevented ODM from fracturing in the wake of Baba’s passing.

According to Owidi, Oburu’s steady leadership has reassured supporters and maintained cohesion at a time when rival factions threatened to destabilize the party.

He highlighted the challenge posed by Edwin Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” faction, which has openly resisted Oburu’s authority.

Owidi argued that despite Sifuna’s efforts to rally grassroots support, the Luo community has remained united under Oburu’s guidance.

“I believe Oburu is the reason the Luo have remained united since the passing of Baba, despite attempts by a Sifuna-led faction to split the community,” Owidi said.

The remarks underscore the tension between ODM’s institutional leadership and populist currents within the party.

While Oburu enjoys the backing of the National Executive Committee and senior party leaders, Sifuna has positioned himself as the defender of Raila’s legacy, appealing to ordinary citizens who feel disconnected from the party establishment.

Owidi’s endorsement highlights the importance of unity in the post-Raila era. For ODM, the challenge lies in balancing continuity with renewal, ensuring the party remains cohesive while addressing calls for reform.

Oburu’s leadership, framed as pragmatic and stabilizing, is being tested against Sifuna’s populist defiance.

As ODM prepares for the 2027 elections, the stakes are high. Owidi’s remarks suggest that the Luo community, historically ODM’s backbone, is rallying behind Oburu.

Yet, the persistence of internal dissent indicates that the party must navigate carefully to avoid fragmentation.

The coming months will determine whether Oburu can consolidate his authority or if Sifuna’s faction will force a reckoning within ODM.
