What Uhuru's Crucial Azimio Meeting Reveals About His 2027 Endgame

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta appears ready to make a stronger return to Kenya’s political scene after calling for a key Azimio meeting scheduled for Monday.

The meeting is expected to bring together members of the coalition’s Council and senior officials, with Kenyatta, who serves as chairman, set to lead the discussions. 

Sources familiar with the plans say the talks will focus on restructuring and rebranding Azimio while exploring ways of bringing major opposition players together ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who currently serves as Azimio’s party leader, has been among the leading voices pushing the idea of a renewed opposition alliance. 

He has repeatedly drawn parallels between the current political climate and the 2002 opposition movement that ended KANU’s long rule, arguing that Kenya could once again be heading toward a major political realignment.

However, the proposed unity effort faces several challenges. Questions remain over who would lead a potential opposition presidential ticket, while uncertainty also surrounds the participation of different ODM factions and other political allies. 

Allies of President William Ruto have already questioned the strength of an opposition coalition that does not include ODM.
