President William Ruto on Wednesday made far-reaching political claims while addressing a cultural gathering in Luo Nyanza, asserting that he played a key role in Raila Odinga’s political journey and that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) would not exist without his contribution.
Speaking during the event attended by local leaders, elders and residents, President Ruto said he was among the founding members of ODM and actively supported Raila at a critical moment in his political career.
He told the crowd that his involvement in the formation of the party and its early growth was driven by the desire to strengthen democracy and unity across the country.
“I once stood with Raila when it mattered most. I helped him politically, and together we built ODM as a national movement,” Ruto said, drawing mixed reactions from the audience.
The President further claimed that in later years, when Raila stepped back from frontline politics, the two held private discussions about the future of the country and the 2027 General Election.
According to Ruto, he personally asked Raila to support his leadership going forward in the interest of national stability and development.
Ruto told the gathering that Raila agreed the Luo community would support his administration, citing the need to move Kenya away from divisive politics and focus on economic transformation.
He said the understanding was anchored on inclusivity, respect for all communities and shared prosperity.
The remarks come at a time when Ruto has intensified his charm offensive in opposition strongholds, particularly in Nyanza, as he seeks to consolidate political support ahead of 2027.
His visit and comments are likely to spark debate within ODM ranks and among Raila’s supporters, many of whom remain influential in the region.
Local leaders at the event urged residents to listen to the President’s message, even as they called for respect for differing political views within the community.
