Good News for President Ruto Following Strategic Boost from the US

The United States and Kenya have marked a significant milestone in their defence partnership with the groundbreaking of a Sh9 billion expansion project at the Manda Bay military base in Lamu County.

The ceremony on January 29, 2026 was co-led by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and senior military commanders underscoring Washington’s commitment to bolstering regional security alongside a key East African ally.

At the heart of the project is an ambitious runway extension and modernization effort that will transform the base’s operational capabilities.

Once completed the expanded runway is expected to accommodate larger aircraft enhancing joint operational readiness and logistical efficiency for both US and Kenya Defence Forces.

Officials say this upgrade will be pivotal in strengthening counter terrorism efforts especially in response to threats posed by extremist groups in Somalia and across the Horn of Africa.

Manda Bay which already serves as a strategic hub for US and Kenyan military operations holds particular importance due to its proximity to key Indian Ocean maritime routes.

Its use has included counter terror missions and regional security operations although the base has previously experienced militant attacks reflecting the volatile environment it helps counter.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence Roselinda Soipan Tuya described the expansion as a force multiplier that will boost rapid response, surveillance and joint operational capabilities against a range of security threats from piracy to human trafficking.

In his remarks Deputy Secretary Landau emphasized that the project symbolizes the enduring nature of the US-Kenya defence partnership and its role in promoting stability.

The expansion is part of broader US engagement in Kenya’s defence landscape which includes training exercises like Exercise Justified Accord and equipment support designed to enhance interoperability and regional crisis response.
