The New Year began with sadness for Senate Speaker Amason Kingi following the sudden death of his bodyguard, Corporal John Lwane Lumumba.
The police officer passed away on January 1, 2026, in an incident that shocked his family, colleagues, and the Speaker himself.
According to Speaker Kingi, Lumumba showed no signs of serious illness before his death.
The two had been together shortly before the tragic news broke, making the loss even more painful and unexpected.
The Speaker said he was informed of Lumumba’s death minutes after they had walked and talked together.
Taking to social media, Speaker Kingi expressed deep sorrow and described the fallen officer as more than just a member of his security team.
He said Lumumba had become family and a trusted companion over the years they worked together.
“Gone too soon my young brother,” Kingi wrote. “One moment we were chatting happily, and the next moment I was told you were no more.”
Corporal Lumumba served under the National Police Service and was attached to the protective unit responsible for guarding senior state officials.
Officers in this unit work under intense pressure and are required to remain alert at all times to ensure the safety of the leaders they protect.
Speaker Kingi praised Lumumba for his dedication, professionalism, and loyalty. He said the officer carried out his duties with discipline and respect, qualities that earned him trust and admiration.
“To me, you were not just a bodyguard,” the Speaker added. “You were family. I admired your commitment and the seriousness with which you handled your work.”
The exact cause of Lumumba’s death has not yet been made public.
The National Police Service has also not released an official statement explaining what happened. Investigations are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the sudden passing.
The incident has sparked public discussion about the sacrifices made by security officers. Many Kenyans have shared condolence messages online, thanking Lumumba for his service and sending comfort to his loved ones.
His death leaves a gap in the Speaker’s security team and a painful loss for those who worked closely with him. For Speaker Kingi, it is a personal loss of someone he trusted and respected.
As the nation mourns, Corporal John Lwane Lumumba will be remembered for his service to Kenya, his loyalty, and the strong bond he built with those he was assigned to protect.
