Thousands of students across the country are set to benefit after President William Ruto officially chartered a new public university, a move aimed at expanding access to higher education and easing pressure on existing institutions.
The newly chartered university is expected to admit thousands of learners from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from underserved regions who have long struggled to secure limited slots in established public universities.
Speaking during the chartering ceremony, President Ruto said the move reflects his administration’s commitment to investing in education as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and social mobility.
He noted that transforming the institution into a fully fledged public university will enhance academic standards, attract qualified lecturers, and improve research capacity in line with national development goals.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the decision, saying it will help address the rising demand for university education following increased enrolment under the Competency-Based Curriculum and expanded access to secondary schooling.
The new status will also allow the university to receive direct government funding, enabling the construction of modern lecture halls, laboratories, hostels, and digital learning infrastructure.
Local leaders hailed the charter as a major boost to regional development, citing expected job creation, growth of small businesses, and improved infrastructure around the university’s location.
Students currently enrolled at the institution expressed optimism, saying the charter will increase the value of their degrees and open up more opportunities for scholarships, partnerships, and international recognition.
Analysts argue that while chartering new universities is a positive step, the government must also ensure adequate funding, quality assurance, and staffing to avoid overstretching limited resources.
As thousands prepare to apply for admission, the chartering of the new public university marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to make higher education more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to national needs.
