“The Issue Is Not Just Removing Ruto” – Caleb Amisi Breaks Ranks with Sifuna Over United Opposition Alliance

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has openly disagreed with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over plans to align the Linda Mwananchi faction with the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a television interview on Friday, February 27, 2026, Amisi distanced himself from Sifuna’s recent remarks indicating readiness to work with opposition leaders united in their bid to make President William Ruto a one-term leader.

The outspoken lawmaker, who is a key figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement — a faction largely composed of leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) who oppose the party’s current direction — said the debate should not be reduced to merely removing Ruto from office.

According to Amisi, Kenya’s political crisis runs deeper than one presidency and requires structural solutions.

“The issue is not just removing Ruto. The issue is solving the traditional problems that Kenya has experienced for decades — tribalism, corruption and the economy,” Amisi said.

He challenged Sifuna’s position, arguing that before entering into any coalition, the Linda Mwananchi team must carefully examine the ideological foundation of the United Opposition. He questioned what the opposition bloc truly stands for and whether their ideals align with those of his faction.

Amisi warned that rushing into alliances without clear principles risks repeating the same cycle of internal wrangles and unstable coalitions that have characterised previous political arrangements.

While clarifying that he is not entirely opposed to collaboration, he insisted that any merger must be guided by well-defined conditions and commitments to reform.

His remarks come days after Sifuna publicly called for a united opposition front, saying that defeating Ruto would require an overwhelming national margin of more than five million votes.

Sifuna argued that Ruto remains a seasoned political strategist with access to vast state machinery, making unity essential to avoid another narrow electoral outcome similar to that of 2022.

The debate has also drawn attention from Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who recently extended an olive branch to Sifuna’s faction.

Gachagua suggested that if the group fronts a formidable presidential candidate such as James Orengo, the United Opposition would be willing to rally behind them.
