KAMPALA – Kenyan lawyer and politician Martha Karua has formally joined the defence team for opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye in Uganda, sending a strong message to military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and President Yoweri Museveni amid the ongoing treason trial.
On Tuesday, proceedings at the Kampala High Court were temporarily suspended after Karua and her team successfully argued that the prosecution had not fully disclosed all evidence, as previously ordered by the court.
On Tuesday, proceedings at the Kampala High Court were temporarily suspended after Karua and her team successfully argued that the prosecution had not fully disclosed all evidence, as previously ordered by the court.
The judge directed the prosecution to complete disclosure by March 3, providing a procedural advantage to the defence.
Karua appeared in court alongside Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and other lawyers representing Besigye, emphasizing that without full disclosure, the defence could not adequately advise their clients. She told the court: “Justice cannot be served if critical evidence is withheld.”
Before addressing the case, Karua raised concerns about her treatment at the court premises, alleging she was mistreated by a police officer.

Before addressing the case, Karua raised concerns about her treatment at the court premises, alleging she was mistreated by a police officer.
She reminded the court that as a certified advocate, she is entitled to protection as an officer of the court. The judge acknowledged her complaint and ensured her access rights were respected.
Karua’s involvement follows months of controversy after Uganda’s Law Council initially refused her a temporary practising certificate.

The decision, widely criticized as politically motivated, delayed her participation in the high-profile trial.
Her eventual admission allowed her to lead a large defence team in what has become a highly visible legal and political battle.
While in Uganda, Karua has also highlighted the importance of protecting democratic rights in Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.

On her verified X account, she warned against attempts to manipulate the polls, urging citizens to register, vote, and defend their ballots. “We will not allow democracy to be trampled,” she said.
Observers note that Karua’s dual focus—defending opposition rights in Uganda and advocating for electoral integrity in Kenya—positions her as a regional figure in promoting democratic governance.
