Kenya’s opposition leaders are planning a three-day retreat on the Coast to decide how to pick their 2027 presidential candidate.
The meeting comes amid disagreements on selection methods and efforts to keep the coalition united.
The United Opposition has faced internal disputes over both the choice of candidate and the process to select a flagbearer.
Leaders aim to use the retreat to agree on a formula that will guide the nomination and strengthen coalition unity.
Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa said the retreat follows their countrywide ‘Niko Kadi’ campaign.
The campaign starts in Ukambani, moves to the Coast in the second week of April, Western Kenya in the third week, and ends in North Eastern Kenya later in the month.
Wamalwa added that the coalition is also talking to other political actors to explore collaboration. He said the retreat will help leaders agree on the method for selecting a candidate and bring others together to move as one.
Wiper Patriotic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who convenes the coalition, will attend the retreat. He wants colleagues to work within Azimio la Umoja for the 2027 elections.
Kalonzo argued there is no need to form a new coalition when one already exists, potentially rebranded as ‘Ukombozi Kenya’.
The retreat follows a failed attempt in February to agree on candidate selection and coalition branding.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i prefers a scientific approach, including a public debate. Kalonzo favours internal discussions and consensus.
Kalonzo said a combination of methods may be used. He emphasised unity over personal ambition and urged leaders to focus on collective goals. He cited the 2002 elections as an example when leaders backed a single candidate to win.
The coalition includes leaders like Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua, George Natembeya, and Eugene Wamalwa, all interested in the presidency. They hope to agree on one candidate through a structured and inclusive process.
Unity and giving confidence to young Kenyans remain priorities. Kalonzo also highlighted addressing youth concerns, including allegations of extrajudicial killings.
Leaders aim to present a strong and united opposition to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
The Coast retreat is now seen as a make-or-break moment for the opposition.
Observers expect the meeting to clarify candidate selection, strengthen coalition cohesion, and set the stage for the next political battle.
