Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has sharply criticised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja following his failure to appear before the Senate Public Accounts Committee despite being summoned.
Speaking on Monday, Cherargei expressed frustration over what he termed as blatant disregard for Senate authority by the county chief.
The senator insisted that Sakaja’s continued absence undermines accountability and weakens oversight efforts by Parliament.
“The governor cannot continue to ignore summons from a constitutional body. This is unacceptable,” Cherargei said.
“If he fails to present himself, then the police must intervene and ensure he is brought before the committee.”
The outspoken legislator went further, warning that senators may take extraordinary measures if the situation persists.
He noted that lawmakers are prepared to personally ensure Sakaja’s attendance, even if it means physically escorting him to Parliament.
“As senators, we will not sit back and watch impunity take root. If necessary, we will go wherever he is, pick him, and bring him before the committee—even if he is hiding among friends,” Cherargei added.
The Senate Public Accounts Committee has been seeking to question the Nairobi governor over concerns related to the management of public funds and accountability within the county government.
Sakaja’s absence marks yet another standoff between county executives and the Senate, a pattern that has in the past raised concerns about respect for institutional processes.
Cherargei emphasised that all public officials, regardless of their position, must comply with lawful summons and cooperate with oversight bodies. He maintained that failure to do so not only violates the law but also erodes public trust in leadership.
The matter is expected to escalate if Sakaja continues to defy the summons, with senators signalling readiness to pursue enforcement measures.
