Political tensions has rocked the ODM party after Nairobi senator and embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna reignited controversial issues that surrounded the 2022 General Election loss.
In his assertion, the super senator who hails from Bungoma county accused Suna East MP Junet Mohamed of alleged misuse of funds and negligence.
Sifuna’s remarks have sparked widespread debate within the opposition and reopened political wounds for those who never recovered from Raila Odinga’s narrow defeat in the last election.
Speaking before top opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Sifuna faulted Junet for publicly questioning the contribution of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying it was disgraceful to target a leader who bore a heavy burden of the Azimio campaign, especially in the Mt Kenya region.
“For the first time, Baba Raila Odinga got more than one million votes in Mt Kenya. That was not by chance; it was because Uhuru Kenyatta supported us financially and materially,” Sifuna said.
Nevertheless, he alleged that some leaders misused those funds instead of paying party agents, directing blame squarely at Junet.
In addition, Sifuna questioned when Uhuru’s money began to be considered “bad,” accusing the MP of mismanaging campaign resources and failing to safeguard votes on election day.
These remarks were supported by Raila Odinga’s former running mate, Martha Karua, who said that nearly all campaign coordination duties, including party agents, were under Junet’s control.
“Baba trusted Junet with almost everything. If there is someone with more information, let them speak out. Let the truth come out,” Karua said, revealing that many candidates complained about agents’ names being changed or missing altogether.
Karua admitted she was unable to track everything since she joined the campaign just two and a half months before the election and was moving across many regions, particularly Mt Kenya, while also being required for national campaigns.
