Why Ruto-Gachagua Explosive War of Words Could Land Them in Prison Ahead of 2027 Polls

Kenyans have expressed growing concern following a series of heated exchanges between President William Ruto and his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, with many warning that their choice of words could have serious legal consequences.

The two leaders, once close political allies, have recently turned into fierce rivals, engaging in public spats during political rallies.

Their remarks, often laced with personal attacks and ridicule, have drawn criticism from citizens who feel that the country’s top leadership is setting a dangerous example ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“This is below standards,” one Kenyan remarked online, echoing the sentiments of many who believe that such exchanges undermine the dignity of public office.

While Kenya’s 2010 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, legal experts warn that this right is not absolute.

The law prohibits the use of speech that incites hatred, promotes discrimination, or demeans others based on personal attributes.

Critics argue that some of the statements made by both leaders may fall within this prohibited category.

According to provisions in the National Cohesion and Integration Act, individuals found guilty of using threatening, abusive, or insulting language that could stir ethnic tension or public unrest risk facing severe penalties. These include a fine of up to one million shillings, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

Observers note that some of the insults exchanged between Ruto and Gachagua have touched on sensitive issues, including body image and personal allegations, raising fears of possible ethnic incitement and social division.

Political analysts warn that such rhetoric, if unchecked, could erode national unity and inflame tensions among supporters.

Many Kenyans have also questioned the president’s involvement in the exchanges, arguing that his position as a symbol of national unity demands a higher level of decorum.

“The presidency shouldn’t be reduced to such levels,” another citizen commented.

The controversy comes at a time when the country is grappling with economic challenges and calls for unity.

Citizens are now urging leaders to shift focus from personal attacks to addressing national issues that directly affect their lives.
