Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung'wah has broken his silence following chaotic scenes during an opposition rally in Kikuyu, where police lobbed teargas to disperse crowds, triggering tension and widespread political reactions.
In a strongly worded statement, Ichung’wah accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of allegedly orchestrating the unrest witnessed during the event. He claimed the violence was not spontaneous but carefully planned, accusing Gachagua’s allies of mobilizing individuals to create instability in the area.
According to the MP, the incidents were part of a broader political strategy aimed at intimidating residents and destabilizing support for President William Ruto’s administration. He alleged that there had been a pattern of unrest linked to similar political gatherings associated with the former Deputy President.
Ichung’wah further raised concerns over what he described as the involvement of “outsiders” in the chaos, questioning why individuals not known to the area were allegedly being mobilized during political events. He also pointed to previous insecurity incidents along the Southern Bypass, claiming they may be linked to political activities in the region.
Calling for immediate action, the legislator urged security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and take decisive steps against anyone found culpable. He emphasized that no leader or supporter should be above the law, warning that those involved in organizing or executing violence would face legal consequences.
The MP also appealed directly to the Inspector General of Police to fast-track investigations, noting that video evidence and other materials could be used to identify suspects and support prosecution efforts. He stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in handling the matter.
At the same time, Ichung’wah called on residents of Kikuyu Constituency to remain calm and avoid being drawn into further confrontation. He urged political actors to embrace peaceful engagement and dialogue, especially as political activity intensifies ahead of future elections.
The incident has deepened the political divide between rival camps, with both sides trading accusations over responsibility for the unrest. As investigations are awaited, the events in Kikuyu continue to highlight rising political tensions in Central Kenya.
