Mystery Deepens After Chinese Worker Found Dead at Talanta Stadium Construction Site

Police in Nairobi have launched investigations into the sudden and mysterious death of a Chinese national at the Talanta Stadium construction site.

The incident, which has raised concern among workers and authorities, was reported on the morning of Monday, March 30, by security personnel stationed at the site located in Jamhuri.

According to preliminary reports, the worker was discovered unresponsive inside a latrine by a chef attached to the Chinese management team overseeing the project.

The shocking discovery prompted immediate action, with security officers and colleagues rushing to the scene.

Efforts were made to save his life as he was quickly transported to Nairobi Hospital. However, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival, leaving many questions unanswered.

Authorities later confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear. However, an initial observation revealed a slight injury on the right side of the deceased’s head, adding to the mystery.

Police officers from Nairobi visited the construction site shortly after the incident to examine the scene and begin investigations. The area has since been secured as detectives continue gathering evidence and recording statements from witnesses.

The body was later moved to Lee Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Nairobi Police Chief Issa Mohamud stated that investigators are currently exploring two possible scenarios — whether the worker died from natural causes or if foul play was involved.

“We are considering all possibilities as investigations continue,” he said.

The incident has drawn attention due to the significance of the Talanta Stadium project, which is one of Kenya’s major infrastructure developments ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 60,000-seater stadium, which is nearing completion, has been under construction since March 2024 and is expected to play a key role in hosting the continental tournament.

Recent inspections by the Senate Committee on Roads and Infrastructure indicated that the project is approximately 86 percent complete, with the completion date now projected for June 2026.

The facility, which is also expected to be renamed Raila Odinga Stadium, employs a large number of both local and foreign workers, including Chinese nationals, making the incident particularly sensitive.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation until the official postmortem results are released.

The case remains open, with detectives working to establish the events leading up to the worker’s death.
