No Master’s, No PhD: Inside Rigathi Gachagua’s Education Journey That Built His Political Career

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has had one of the most remarkable and planned educational journeys throughout his life.

Gachagua started off his early primary education at Kabiruini Primary School from 1971 to 1977.

He then went to Kianyaga High School for his secondary education, both O-level and A-level, from 1978 to 1983.

For university studies, Gachagua enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Political Science and Literature from 1985 to 1988.

He was not just a student of political science and literature but also held student leadership roles, such as chairman of the Association of Literature Students.

Upon completion of his degree, Gachagua pursued an advanced diploma in public administration from the Kenya School of Government from 1999 to 2000.

This diploma was viral in his public administration and governance training for several civil servants.

Another study Gachagua partook in was the Paramilitary Training at the Administration Police Institute in 1990, and this prepared him for roles in Kenya’s provincial administration system.

Gachagua is highly academically enriched, though he did not seek any further education, a master's degree, or a PhD, something that is common among many Kenyan leaders.

Even after joining politics and becoming a top administrator, he has not developed the spirit to further his education.

His strongest academic alignment is with government administration rather than technical or economic expertise.

Gachagua’s academic path is typical of many Kenyan civil servants of his era, where an undergraduate degree, state administrative training, and practical government experience were the basic requirements.
