"I Owe No One An Apology" Ruto Fires Back at ODM Leaders Over This

President William Ruto on Saturday made a bold and unexpected declaration during the ODM Founders’ Dinner, insisting that he played a central role in the birth of the Orange Democratic Movement and therefore owes no one an apology for sponsoring the high-profile event.

Ruto, who has in recent months surprised many by warming up to ODM despite years of political rivalry, told the gathering that his contribution to the party’s formation is undeniable and recorded in Kenya’s political history.

His statement, “I sponsored this ODM founders' dinner because I am a founder member of ODM and I have no apologies to make to anybody!” sparked excitement, murmurs, and a mix of reactions among party loyalists and observers.

The President noted that political differences should never erase the truth of Kenya’s political journey.

He reminded attendees that he was a key figure in the 2005 Orange movement that challenged the proposed constitution during the landmark referendum, a campaign that birthed ODM as a major political force.

According to Ruto, those events formed the foundation of a movement that has shaped Kenya’s multi-party politics for two decades.

Ruto emphasized unity and reconciliation, saying leaders should not remain trapped in past antagonisms when the country needs cooperation for development.

He added that his presence and sponsorship were gestures of respect for history and for the men and women who built the party from the ground up.

His remarks come at a time when ODM is navigating internal tension over succession, leadership renewal and its relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

By asserting his place in the party’s early history, Ruto injected new energy into debates about ODM’s identity and future.

Although some ODM supporters cheered him on, others expressed surprise, even skepticism, about his renewed closeness with the party.

Nonetheless, Ruto’s unapologetic declaration has added a fresh twist to the evolving political realignment surrounding ODM at 20.
