Tanzania is witnessing mixed reactions after President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, as the new Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology.
The appointment was part of a major cabinet reshuffle announced on November 17, 2025, which saw several ministries receive new leaders.
Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is 43 years old, has been serving as the Member of Parliament for Makunduchi Constituency in Zanzibar.
She is not new to public service, as she has also served in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Her background includes a law degree from the Open University of Tanzania. Many people know her for being active, disciplined, and dedicated in her political career.
In the new cabinet structure, Wanu will work under the Ministry of Education, which is led by Professor Adolf Mkenda.
Her role as Deputy Minister will involve helping to oversee education policies, reforms, and other national programmes meant to improve learning standards across the country.
Education remains a key priority in Tanzania, and many people expect her to bring fresh ideas and strong leadership to the sector.
However, her appointment has drawn strong debate in Tanzania. Some citizens and political commentators have raised concerns about nepotism, arguing that appointing the president’s daughter to such a senior position may not look fair.
On social media, some critics questioned whether family members should hold top government positions.
Local and regional media also reported that members of the public had mixed feelings, with some supporting the decision while others were worried about transparency and accountability.
Despite the criticism, others have defended the appointment, saying Wanu is qualified and has experience in public leadership.
Supporters believe she will perform well, just like any other appointed leader, and that she deserves a chance to serve. They argue that being related to the president should not stop someone from serving the nation if they are capable.
The reshuffle also saw Wanu’s husband, Mohamed Mchengerwa, appointed Minister of Health. This added to the public conversation about family members taking top roles in government.
