‘"Ule Mtu Aliuwa JM Kariuki Ni Mkikuyu," Furious Gachagua Blasts Mt. Kenya Leaders Backing Ruto

On Tuesday, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stirred the crowd with a compelling speech that revisited the contentious assassination of freedom fighter JM Kariuki.

During the funeral service for Terry Wanjiru Kariuki, the widow of the late JM Kariuki, held in Gilgil Constituency, Nakuru County, Gachagua directed a fierce critique at Mount Kenya leaders aligned with President William Ruto. In a heartfelt and stirring address, he reminded those in attendance of the region’s history, charging them with betrayal of their own heroes.

“The person who killed JM Kariuki wasn’t a Luo; he was a Kikuyu! Let’s acknowledge the truth and not be deceived,” he proclaimed, his voice resonating through the audience. This bold statement elicited enthusiastic cheers and murmurs, striking a chord with many present.

Gachagua accused some regional leaders of forsaking their ancestors’ struggles for political gain, cautioning them against becoming instruments that could fracture Mount Kenya’s unity.

He emphasized the importance of standing together to protect the community's interests, insisting that history must not repeat itself.

As Gachagua spoke, the crowd began to chant and sing songs of unity, momentarily overwhelming him and prompting him to pause. The atmosphere turned emotional as residents reflected on the painful legacy of JM Kariuki’s assassination, a dark chapter in Kenya’s political history.

His comments come during a period marked by rising political tensions between him and President Ruto, with ongoing speculation about rifts within the ruling coalition. Gachagua’s poignant reminder of JM Kariuki’s legacy appeared to serve as both a lesson in history and a stern warning to leaders from his community.
