ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna has revealed he was summoned today by the Luhyia Elders Forum in Kakamega to discuss growing concerns over resource use in Western Kenya.
The elders invited Sifuna and Senator Osotsi to raise community grievances. Their main issues were the privatization of sugar mills, gold mining in Ikolomani, and a planned nuclear power plant in Siaya County.
The privatization of sugar mills like Nzoia Sugar Company has caused anger among farmers. The elders said the leasing process benefits private investors while leaving locals at a disadvantage.
Sifuna promised to raise these matters in Parliament and within ODM to ensure fairness for the community and protect their livelihoods.
The nuclear power project in Siaya County is valued at over KSh 500 billion. While seen as important for Kenya’s energy security, locals are worried about safety and environmental risks near Lake Victoria.
Governor James Orengo called it a “game-changer” but admitted the community has real concerns that need addressing.
Gold mining in Ikolomani caused the most tension. The Shanta Gold project covers 337 acres in Bushiangala and Isulu. It promises a modern refinery but may displace over 800 households.
Artisanal miners fear losing their jobs. On December 6, clashes over land surveys left three people dead, more than ten injured, and 63 arrested.
A shaft collapse on December 9 killed three more and led Kakamega County to halt mining temporarily.
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Senator Khalwale criticized the project. Natembeya asked why locals are paid for their resources instead of controlling them.
Khalwale said it is a fight to protect heritage and warned against foreign exploitation.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa met Mining CS Hassan Joho to demand fair compensation and engagement. Many residents still refuse to relocate.
The elders’ summons shows a strong push to protect Western Kenya’s wealth. They are seeking wider support to ensure the community benefits from local resources.
As Sifuna and Osotsi engage, the battle between development projects and community rights continues to create tension.
