Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has once again stirred political debate after openly distancing himself from President William Ruto’s administration, insisting he cannot associate with a government he claims has failed to fulfil its promises to Kenyans.
Speaking during a public rally today, Babu Owino stated that despite the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) signalling its intention to work with President Ruto, he personally would not align himself with what he termed a “non-performing government.”
The outspoken legislator accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of neglecting key pledges made to citizens during the 2022 campaigns.
He argued that Kenyans were still burdened by high living costs, unemployment, and economic uncertainty, challenges he said the government had not shown genuine commitment to resolving.
According to Babu Owino, leaders must remain accountable to the people rather than political arrangements between parties.
“ODM may choose to cooperate with Ruto, but as Babu Owino, I cannot support a government that has failed to deliver even the basics to its citizens,” he told the crowd.
He added that his loyalty remained with his constituents and the wider Kenyan populace who, he said, are suffering under harsh economic conditions.
His remarks signal growing tension within ODM, where differing opinions have emerged regarding the party’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza government.
Babu Owino’s declaration comes at a time when political realignments continue to shape Kenya’s path toward the 2027 elections.
While ODM’s leadership has expressed willingness to engage the government in the spirit of national dialogue and cooperation, the MP maintained that such cooperation should not come at the expense of holding the administration accountable.
His strong stance is likely to fuel further debate within the opposition party and among political observers, as questions arise on whether ODM’s cooperation with President Ruto will encounter resistance from key party figures.
