"Prepare for Heavy Rainfall," Kenya Met Warns Kenyans of Upcoming Heavy Rainfall

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a warning for widespread rainfall across the country from Friday, December 12, through Sunday, December 14. 

Residents are urged to prepare for persistent showers that are expected to intensify as the weekend progresses.

According to the department, rainfall will affect the Highlands on both sides of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Northeastern, Coastal, and South-Eastern lowlands. 

Farmers in the Rift Valley and highland areas have welcomed the rains, hoping they will boost soil moisture ahead of planting activities.

The KMD has also cautioned that northern regions, particularly Turkana and Marsabit counties, may experience strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s). 

Residents in these areas are advised to secure light structures, avoid open water activities, and exercise caution on dusty roads.

Weather experts note that strong winds during transitional periods are common and can affect road travel, aviation, and outdoor activities. 

Travelers are advised to plan carefully, remain vigilant, and adjust schedules according to changing conditions.

The department highlighted the risk of flash floods in low-lying zones, slippery roads, and reduced visibility due to enhanced rainfall. 

Kenyans living in flood-prone areas are encouraged to monitor water levels closely and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain periods.

In addition, motorists are warned about the likelihood of traffic disruptions and waterlogged streets in urban areas. The rains may also impact public transport services, requiring commuters to exercise patience and caution.

KMD has urged the public to stay updated via official communication channels, including social media posts and radio broadcasts. Continuous monitoring of weather updates is recommended, especially for residents engaged in farming, fishing, or outdoor work.

Authorities emphasize that while the rainfall is beneficial for agriculture, it poses safety risks for outdoor activities. Residents should therefore balance preparedness with caution to mitigate potential hazards.

The upcoming showers follow weeks of dry spells in several regions. Experts say the rains are timely for agricultural zones, helping replenish water resources and support planting cycles.

Kenyans are encouraged to take practical precautions, including ensuring proper drainage around homes, securing vulnerable structures, and avoiding areas prone to flooding. The KMD promises further updates as weather conditions evolve over the weekend.
