The Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) new leader, Oburu Oginga, faced a rocky start as he addressed supporters at Kamukunji Grounds on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The veteran leader, known as the “Youth Leader,” appeared uneasy amid the energetic crowd of young ODM supporters.
His speech was interrupted several times by chants, and he seemed unsure why some sections of the audience did not respond to his calls for support.
Oburu’s challenges began when the Nairobi Luo Council of Elders presented him with traditional symbols of leadership, including the three-legged stool, the Orengo whisk, and the Okumba shield.
These were handed to him as a mark of his new role in the party and his community.
He also struggled with a crowded dais, which remained full despite repeated calls for non-essential people to move aside.
At one point, visibly frustrated, he asked the crowd to give him space to speak.
“It is now time; I want to speak. Just give me the time to speak, and please move aside a bit so that I can address the people now,” Oburu said.
Despite the interruptions, he continued, explaining why he chose Kibra for his first public rally.
He linked the venue to his late brother, Raila Odinga, highlighting its importance in ODM politics.
“Every time Raila came from outside with any important message, he always started here at Kibra Grounds. So this place is a significant place for our politics,” Oburu said. “I decided to start with Kibra as a fitting remembrance of Raila, as this was his bedroom.”
