Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has responded to concerns raised by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and the united opposition following the chaotic incident at Othaya Church on Sunday, January 25.
In a statement shared on the National Police Service (NPS) official X account, the police confirmed that IG Kanja met leaders of the united opposition at his office to discuss the matter.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Inspectors General Eliud Lagat and Gilbert Masengeli, alongside John Onyango, who represented the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), as well as other senior officers from the NPS headquarters.
According to the statement, the Inspector General formally received a petition from the opposition leaders regarding the Othaya incident and assured them that the concerns raised would be investigated thoroughly and impartially.
IG Kanja reaffirmed the National Police Service’s commitment to political neutrality, stressing that officers would carry out their duties without fear, favour, or bias, regardless of political affiliation.
However, the NPS also reminded political leaders of the importance of notifying police in advance about planned public meetings and gatherings to allow for adequate security arrangements and prevent disorder.
Kanja emphasized that continued cooperation between the police and the opposition leadership would be crucial in ensuring smooth investigations and maintaining public order as inquiries into the incident continue.
The Othaya church incident has sparked national debate over political intolerance and security conduct, placing the police response under close public scrutiny.
