Advocate Ndegwa Njiru, representing the United Opposition, has extended an invitation to President William Ruto to attend their upcoming rally in Othaya, Nyeri County, scheduled for February 1.
The announcement, made via X, underscores the coalition's growing confidence as they resume joint political activities following recent disruptions.
The United Opposition, comprising key figures such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K's Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party's Justin Muturi, PLP's Martha Karua, and Cleophas Malala, aims to address national issues at the wantam rally.
Gachagua, popularly known as Riggy G, will host the event in Othaya Town, marking his return to the Mount Kenya region in the midst of demands for equity and accountability.
The timing of this invitation coincides with increased political tension. Inspector General Douglas Kanja met with opposition leaders recently to voice concerns about alleged intimidation, attacks, and harassment of their supporters.
Tear gas and disturbances at earlier events in Sagana, Gatundu, and Othaya led to charges against the government.
In response, Ruto's supporters have attacked the opposition for undermining organisations such as the IEBC and concentrating too much on the 2027 elections.
Reactions to Njiru's post on social media are mixed; some applaud the unity, while others write it off as desperation. Emphasising national unity, supporters proclaim that "fear is gone."
The rally could signal a unified front against Ruto's administration, potentially threatening mega protests if demands go unmet.
As Kenya's political landscape heats up, eyes are on whether Ruto will accept the invitation, which could either ease or exacerbate divisions ahead of 2027.
