“Mimi Sitakuwa Running Mate Wa Mtu Yeyote": Martha Karua Threatens to Walk Away from United Opposition if Not Picked as Flagbearer

NAKURU – People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has issued a stark warning to her colleagues in the United Opposition, declaring that she will run independently if she is not selected as the coalition’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a rally in Nakuru County, Karua said: “Mimi Sitakuwa Running Mate Wa Mtu Yeyote. Kama Sitapewa Tikiti Basi Nitaenda Kivyangu Mpaka Katika Uchaguzi.”

She emphasized that she is unwilling to deputize anyone and is determined to pursue the presidency herself if the opposition does not back her candidacy.

Karua argued that Kenya is ready to elect its first female president and stated confidently: “2027 Kenya itakuwa na mwanamke wa kwanza maka rais ambaye ni mimi.”

Her remarks underscored her ambition and served as a direct challenge to other prominent opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi, and former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

Political analysts say Karua’s declaration could intensify internal negotiations within the United Opposition as leaders deliberate on who will lead the coalition into the 2027 contest.

Her insistence on leading the ticket reflects growing tensions in a coalition that has been campaigning jointly but has yet to formalize its choice of presidential candidate.

During the rally, Karua also highlighted her track record in politics and governance, asserting that she possesses the leadership experience and vision necessary to guide Kenya.

She encouraged supporters to remain united in advocating for a historic first female presidency and to actively participate in voter registration and mobilization for the upcoming elections.

Observers note that Karua’s threat to go it alone could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 race, especially in the event that other opposition heavyweights are unable to reach a consensus.

A divided opposition could create opportunities for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to consolidate its support base.

The rally, which drew significant crowds in Nakuru, saw Karua’s supporters respond enthusiastically to her speech, signaling strong grassroots backing for her presidential ambitions.

Her firm stance indicates that discussions over the United Opposition flagbearer are likely to intensify in the coming months as leaders negotiate alliances and prepare for one of Kenya’s most closely watched elections.
