“We Know Your Ways" Martha Karua Warns Ruto That By-Election Wins Won’t Save Him in 2027

NAIVASHA – Kenyan politician and lawyer Martha Karua has dismissed recent by-election victories by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), warning that they do not guarantee President William Ruto an easy path to re-election in 2027.

Speaking on Friday at a United Alternative Government rally in Naivasha, Karua told supporters: “We know your ways, but by-election wins will not save you in the general election.

The real fight is coming.” She emphasized that by-elections and general elections operate under very different dynamics, and that the mood of the country cannot be judged from small contests alone.

Karua alleged that the recent by-elections, in which UDA secured all four contested seats, were not conducted fairly and suggested that President Ruto used his influence to sway results.

She insisted that the opposition is carefully monitoring the situation and preparing strategies to ensure that manipulation in smaller elections does not repeat on a national scale.

Her address focused on the need for unity within the opposition camp. Karua said leaders in the United Opposition are planning to agree on a single presidential candidate to consolidate votes.

At the same time, she stressed the importance of fielding strong candidates in every elective seat to challenge UDA’s dominance nationwide.

The rally drew enthusiastic supporters, with Karua noting that interference in by-elections is far easier than attempting to manipulate a nationwide vote.

“Even if someone can control a by-election, it will not be easy to do the same across the country,” she said, signaling determination and readiness for the 2027 political battle.

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi also spoke at the rally, urging the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to end its contract with election technology provider Smartmatic, citing unresolved questions about the integrity of the voting system.

Karua and opposition leaders also called on young people to participate actively in voter registration during March, emphasizing that broad engagement will be crucial to securing fair results.

Despite the opposition’s warnings, UDA welcomed its by-election victories as evidence of continued public support.

Analysts say that while by-elections are important indicators, they are not necessarily predictive of outcomes in the general election, especially when nationwide turnout and coalition dynamics are considered.

The rally highlighted the opposition’s message that the 2027 contest will be closely fought and that President Ruto cannot rely solely on by-election wins to secure victory.
