Woman recounts chilling matatu ride sitting beside mum carrying dead baby

A Nairobi woman has shared a chilling experience of unknowingly sitting next to a mother carrying her deceased child during a matatu journey from Nairobi to Kitui.

Maureen, who had boarded the vehicle at 6am expecting a routine three-hour trip to her village, said nothing initially appeared unusual.

She took a seat beside a woman holding a young boy on her lap. The child was fully dressed, complete with shoes, and appeared to be fast asleep.

“I made small talk and asked whether he was deeply asleep, and she agreed,” Maureen recalled.

As the journey progressed, however, Maureen began to sense that something was not right. She noticed that the child had not moved or shifted position since they boarded.

The mother appeared tense and unsettled, but she brushed off concerns when asked if she needed help.

“I offered to help carry the boy or assist her if she had a problem, but she refused and said she only had a slight headache,” Maureen said.

Moments later, the woman broke down in tears, drawing the attention of other passengers. Concerned travellers asked the driver to stop at a nearby chemist so she could get painkillers. She accepted the medication but declined any offer to let someone else hold the child.

The situation escalated when the matatu reached Kitui Junction and police officers conducting a routine inspection asked passengers to alight. The woman hesitated before eventually stepping out, leaving the child lying on the seat.

When passengers prepared to reboard, someone noticed the boy appeared lifeless. Panic spread quickly as screams erupted at the roadblock.

Police officers rushed to the scene and questioned the mother, while a male passenger carefully carried the child out of the vehicle.

It was then that the truth emerged — the boy was already dead.

According to Maureen, the mother later explained that her son had died the previous day after suffering an epileptic seizure at home. She claimed she had administered first aid and put him to bed, only to discover the following morning that he was no longer breathing.

Faced with the high cost of transporting the body and mortuary fees, the grieving mother reportedly decided to carry her child home disguised as though he were still alive.

The heartbreaking revelation left passengers shaken, turning what was meant to be a simple journey into a traumatic memory none of them will soon forget.
