Gladys Wanga Speaks After Gachagua Warning To ODM Leaders, Vows To Protect ODM Stronghold

Homa Bay Governor and ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has vowed to strongly defend the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s influence in the Nyanza region, saying protecting the party is her top political priority.

Speaking during a public gathering in Homa Bay on Monday, April 13, 2026, Wanga said ODM must remain strong and united, especially as political competition intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

She insisted that the party’s parliamentary strength must not be reduced “even by an inch,” stressing that ODM’s survival depends on unity and discipline among its leaders and supporters.

Wanga’s remarks come at a time when President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement are exploring possible political cooperation, including coalition talks and zoning arrangements in different parts of the country.

However, ODM leaders from Nyanza have maintained a firm position that their traditional strongholds must be protected.

The governor said ODM will not accept any political arrangement that weakens its dominance in regions where it enjoys strong support.

She added that any coalition deal with United Democratic Alliance must include a fair sharing formula, with clear zoning to avoid competition between allied parties in the same areas.

Wanga also emphasized that ODM should not be treated as a junior partner in any alliance, calling for an equal power-sharing structure.

She argued that political strength must be built on strong party structures before any other negotiations are made.

Other ODM leaders have also supported the idea of zoning, saying it would prevent internal competition and ensure the party retains its influence in its traditional areas.

They insist that ODM must first secure its base before engaging in broader national political partnerships.

The debate highlights growing political positioning as parties prepare early for the 2027 elections, with ODM leaders in Nyanza taking a hard stance to safeguard their regional dominance.
