RIP: Shock as Man Commits Suicide in Cell 3 Days After Arrest Over Cop’s Daughter Abduction

Authorities in Malindi are facing growing scrutiny following the death of a 25-year-old man who was discovered dead inside a police cell on Friday, April 17, just three days after his arrest in connection with an alleged abduction.

According to Vocal Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid, the deceased identified as Lucky Odhiambo Okoth was found lifeless in the morning hours in what has been described as a disturbing and unclear incident.

Citing official police reports, Khalid stated that Okoth was found hanging inside his cell using a makeshift rope reportedly made from torn clothing.

The incident occurred at Malindi Police Station.

Khalid further noted that Okoth was being held alone in the cell, despite 21 other detainees being held within the same police station at the time.

He questioned the circumstances surrounding the separation and death, calling for transparency in the handling of the case.

He reported that police documents indicated there were 21 other prisoners at the station, but Okoth was placed in a separate cell on his own.

The exact cause and circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Human rights organisations, including Vocal Africa and the Malindi Community Human Rights Centre, have urged for an independent investigation.

Pressure is also mounting for the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to take up the matter.

Okoth had been arrested days earlier in connection with the alleged abduction of a 17-year-old girl in Malindi.

According to detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau working alongside Malindi Sub-County officers, the teenager was reported missing on April 12, 2026, by her father, who is a senior officer at GK Prison Malindi.

Investigations showed the girl had been in communication with unknown individuals using two mobile phone numbers before she disappeared.

The case escalated into an abduction after the suspect allegedly contacted the family and demanded a ransom of 200,000 shillings, while also issuing threats against the victim.

Police further reported that the suspect allowed the girl to speak with her family during the ordeal, confirming she was being held.

Using forensic tracing and intelligence-led operations, detectives located and arrested Okoth in the Muyeye area of Malindi town.

The girl was rescued safely and reunited with her family, later receiving medical attention.

Investigations into the abduction case are ongoing, with detectives pursuing additional leads to determine whether other individuals were involved.
