Wahome Thuku Sparks Debate After Ruling Out Kalonzo and Backing Matiang’i Ahead of 2027 Race

Lawyer Wahome Thuku has triggered widespread political discussion after openly declaring his preferred direction ahead of the 2027 general election, ruling out support for several key political figures while signaling backing for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

In his remarks shared publicly, Thuku stated that he does not intend to support Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, nor does he plan to vote for President William Ruto in the upcoming election. His statement immediately drew attention due to its direct and uncompromising tone.

Thuku further explained that his political decision is final and not subject to persuasion, emphasizing that he has already settled on his preferred candidate. He used strong language to describe his stance, suggesting that he cannot revisit political choices from the past or support what he considers uninspiring alternatives.

According to him, the only opposition figure he would consider supporting is Matiang’i, whom he implied has the potential to represent a credible alternative in the 2027 presidential race. He added that if Matiang’i does not emerge as the main opposition candidate, he would rather abstain from voting altogether.

The lawyer’s remarks have generated intense reactions across social media and political circles, with some Kenyans praising his clarity and decisiveness, while others criticized what they see as the narrowing of political choices to individual personalities rather than party ideologies or policy platforms.

Thuku also stated that regardless of the outcome of the election, he would accept the results, signaling a personal commitment to political tolerance despite his firm voting preference.

Political analysts say his comments reflect a broader trend in Kenya’s political landscape, where voter loyalty is increasingly shaped by individual personalities rather than traditional party structures or ideological alignment.

The emerging focus on figures such as Matiang’i, Kalonzo, and Ruto highlights the shifting dynamics ahead of the 2027 contest.
