Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has publicly expressed regret over his role in supporting the nomination of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 general election.
Speaking during a public engagement in Nairobi, Sudi said he was among the leaders who strongly pushed for Gachagua’s inclusion on the joint ticket, but now believes it was a wrong political decision. He described the choice as one that, in his view, exposed the country to leadership risks that he did not fully anticipate at the time.
The legislator went further to ask Kenyans for forgiveness, stating that his judgment during the 2022 election period may have been influenced by political considerations that he now regrets. He emphasized the importance of accountability among leaders, noting that decisions made at the top level of politics have long-term consequences for governance and national stability.
Sudi also claimed that Gachagua’s leadership style and political conduct after assuming office contributed to growing tensions within government. He suggested that the former Deputy President became increasingly confrontational in his engagements, particularly after his fallout with the current administration.
Since his impeachment from office, Gachagua has repositioned himself as a vocal critic of the government, frequently challenging policies and actions of the Kenya Kwanza administration. His new political role has placed him at the center of an emerging opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
According to Sudi, this shift has confirmed his belief that the earlier endorsement may not have been the best decision for the country. His remarks reflect broader discussions within the ruling coalition about internal disagreements and the long-term impact of political alliances formed during elections.
Political observers note that Sudi’s public apology is significant, as it highlights ongoing unease within the ruling coalition and raises questions about past candidate selection processes. Some analysts argue that such statements could deepen divisions within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), while others see it as a sign of political reflection and recalibration.
The comments have sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some praising Sudi for his honesty, while others accuse him of shifting blame after political circumstances have changed.
