United Opposition-linked lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has alleged that he and other political actors narrowly escaped death during violent scenes that unfolded in Kikuyu Constituency on Saturday, amid a tense political rally associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a series of posts on social media platform X, Njiru claimed that security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds gathered for the rally, describing the incident as a near-fatal experience. He further stated that only what he termed divine intervention saved them from harm.
According to Njiru, the opposition team had insisted on proceeding with the visit to Kikuyu despite rising tension, with earlier messages indicating a defiant stance that they would enter the area regardless of possible resistance. He later softened his tone, attributing their survival during the chaos to divine protection.
The lawyer also referenced several opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, suggesting coordination among opposition leaders during the politically charged engagement.
However, reports indicate that some of the named leaders were not physically present at the rally, despite being mentioned in online commentary surrounding the event.
Eyewitness accounts and online footage circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes as tear gas filled parts of Kikuyu town, forcing sections of the crowd to scatter while others held their ground. Supporters of the opposition claimed they were determined to continue with the event despite the disruption.
Former Deputy President Gachagua reportedly addressed supporters amid the unrest, urging them to remain calm and stay put despite the heavy presence of security personnel and the effects of tear gas. His remarks were widely shared online, further amplifying political tensions.
Separately, reports also emerged of earlier disruptions along routes leading to the venue, with allegations of vandalism and roadblocks that affected movement in the area. These incidents have not been independently verified.
Njiru’s remarks on social media further escalated political rhetoric, with statements warning that the opposition movement would continue pushing its agenda in central Kenya regardless of resistance. His comments added to the already heated political atmosphere in the region.
The events in Kikuyu underscore the growing political temperature in Mt Kenya as rival factions intensify their campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election. Analysts say the region has become a key battleground, with competing alliances seeking to consolidate influence among voters.
