Suba North MP Millie Mabona has spoken out about dowry payment, revealing that she refused to let her husband pay it for her.
Mabona's statement comes after a controversy surrounding Kenyan lawyer Ogolla Steve, who allegedly took back the cows he had paid as dowry for his ex-lover, Cebbie Koks.
Mabona said, "When I love a man, a simple word of 'I love you and I commit to you' suffices. An exchange of vows publicly shows commitment to stay together.
But equating my worth to cows is a no-no for me. I respect those who choose that path, though. It's just not a thing for me. Should I leave Mabona or should he leave me, no cows, with or without bloggers, shall be seen walking to or from anywhere related to me."
Mabona's comments have sparked a debate on the relevance of dowry in modern relationships.
Tommy Ochola, who gave his opinion stated that Ogolla had done the right thing alleging that some women turn dowry payment into a business.
"I think he did the right thing. He set her free and also, this will discourage women who turn this into a business".
