In Makueni County, heavy drama was witnessed during the burial of former minister Joseph Munyao after Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua was badly heckled by mourners who support the opposition.
The incident happened when the CS tried to read President William Ruto’s condolence message, but the crowd refused to listen and began shouting loudly.
According to reports from one of the local media houses, CS Mutua continued reading the message despite the loud chants of “Wamtam! Wamtam!” from the angry mourners.
He tried to remain calm and push through the noise, but the shouting got worse. After a short struggle, the CS gave up and quietly sat down as the crowd refused to keep calm.
The CS reportedly urged the mourners to allow him a few minutes so he could finish delivering the president’s message.
“Please, my people, just give me a short moment to complete this message,” he pleaded. However, nobody listened to him. The shouting only grew louder, making it impossible for him to continue.
Church leaders who were present at the burial also tried to intervene and calm down the angry mourners. They asked the crowd to respect the ceremony and avoid turning it into a political battlefield.
Unfortunately, their efforts were ignored. The burial ceremony quickly shifted into a political arena when opposition leaders were invited to speak, and the crowd welcomed them with cheers.
Opposition leaders, led by Justin Muturi, used their time to criticize the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the violence witnessed during the recent by-election.
“What we saw in that election was shameful. IEBC must take responsibility for the chaos and protect the will of the people,” one of the leaders said as the crowd applauded loudly.
