"We Respect Your Age, Not Your Leadership" Babu Owino Tells Oburu Odinga, Declares Stand

ODM Member of Parliament Babu Owino has openly criticized Oburu Odinga for assuming the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) while his brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has not yet been laid to rest.

Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, Owino questioned the legitimacy of Oburu’s leadership move, arguing that it disregards party traditions and the sentiments of grassroots members.

Owino, a vocal supporter of the late Raila Odinga, insisted that while he and other senior ODM leaders respect Oburu as an elder, they cannot recognize his authority over party decisions.

He highlighted that the group led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, himself, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and other ODM stalwarts, had opposed the party’s recent decision to support President William Ruto, emphasizing that their loyalty to Raila’s vision remains unwavering.

“This is not about disrespect; it is about principles and loyalty to Raila Odinga’s legacy. We will continue to uphold the values that Raila fought for and ensure that ODM remains true to its course,” Owino said.

The remarks underscore growing tensions within ODM as factions debate the party’s direction following Raila’s death.

While Oburu Odinga has asserted control, some party members feel sidelined, raising concerns about unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts note that these internal disputes could impact ODM’s cohesion and influence, especially in regions historically loyal to Raila Odinga.

Political observers say the unfolding rift reflects broader challenges in Kenya’s opposition politics, where leadership transitions often ignite intense debates among party elites and grassroots supporters.
